Nantes est la sixième plus grande ville de France, située à l'embouchure de la Loire. Ancienne capitale de la tribu gauloise des Namnets, capitale de la Marche bretonne au temps de Charlemagne, aujourd'hui grand centre portuaire, éducatif et industriel, troisième place financière de France (après Paris et Lyon), ville d'art. et d'histoire, la ville natale de Jules Verne, le chef-lieu de la région Pays de la Loire et du département de Loire-Atlantique, qui m'a abrité pendant la guerre. Une grande et belle métropole, où l'antiquité se conjugue avec la modernité, et l'élégance avec la vulgarité. On l'appelait autrefois la « Venise de l'Occident », mais au XXe siècle, Nantes a complètement changé : les nombreux canaux et chenaux fluviaux qui traversaient la ville ont été comblés et transformés en autoroutes, et la voie ferrée qui la traversait était cachée sous terre. Après les bombardements anglo-américains de 1943-44, Nantes fut gravement endommagée et par la suite de nombreux monuments architecturaux, notamment la cathédrale médiévale de Nantes et le château des ducs de Bretagne, furent soigneusement restaurés.

Previously, it was called the "Western Venice", but in the 20th century, Nantes completely changed: numerous canals and river channels crossing the city were filled in and turned into highways, and the railway that cut through it was hidden underground. After the British and American bombings of 1943-44, Nantes suffered severely and subsequently many architectural monuments, in particular the medieval Nantes Cathedral and the Castle of the Dukes of Brittany, were carefully restored.
