Selon la légende, en 708, l'archange Michel confia à l'évêque d'Avranches, saint Aubert, la mission de construire une église sur un rocher inexpugnable. Par trois fois, le gardien de la Porte du Paradis dut venir trouver l'évêque, car il n'était pas sûr d'avoir bien interprété le signe. Ce n'est qu'après que l'archange Michel l'ait, selon une version, frappé à la tête avec son doigt, et selon une autre, brûlé la soutane de l'évêque avec une épée, qu'Aubert ordonna aux moines de commencer la construction. C'est à cette époque qu'un raz-de-marée engloutit la forêt environnante et entoure la montagne, la transformant en île. 

De 965 à nos jours (par intermittence), l'abbaye bénédictine s'y est installée. Des offices y sont célébrés et les touristes peuvent y participer, tout comme les pèlerins qui viennent régulièrement sur l'île. Les uns et les autres ne cessent de s'émerveiller de la grandeur de l'ingéniosité humaine qui a permis de créer un miracle dans de telles conditions.

Services are held here and tourists are welcome to attend, along with the regular pilgrims who come to the island. Both never tire of marveling at the greatness of human skill that made it possible to create a man-made miracle in such conditions.

Именно в это время приливная волна поглотила окрестный лес и окружила гору, превратив ее в остров. 

С 965 года и до наших дней (с перерывами) здесь расположено бенедиктинское аббатство. Здесь проходят службы, в которых могут принимать участие и туристы наравне с регулярно прибывающими на остров паломниками. И те и другие не устают восхищаться величием человеческого мастерства, позволившего создать рукотворное чудо в таких условиях.
