En 1283, Jean le Roux, duc de Bretagne, entoura Dinan d'une ceinture de remparts. L'actuel château de Dinan a été construit au XIVe siècle pour remplacer un château plus ancien détruit vers 1170. Abandonné au XVIIe siècle, le château a d'abord été transformé en résidence de gouverneur, puis en prison militaire. Tout au long du XVIIIe siècle, des marins anglais y sont détenus. Au siècle suivant, c'est une prison ordinaire, et au début du XXe siècle, le château est racheté par la ville qui y fonde en 1908 le musée municipal.

In 1283, Jean le Roux, Duke of Brittany, surrounded Dinan with a belt of ramparts. The present castle of Dinan was built in the XIV century to replace the old one, destroyed around 1170. Abandoned in the XVII century, the castle was first converted into a governor's residence and then into a military prison. Throughout the 18th century it was used to hold captured English sailors. In the next century it became a regular prison, and at the beginning of the twentieth century the town bought the castle and in 1908 established a municipal museum there.

В 1283 году герцог Бретани Жан ле Ру окружил Динан поясом валов. Нынешний замок Динана был построен в XIV веке взамен старого, разрушеного около 1170 г. Заброшенный в XVII веке, замок сначала преобразовали в резиденцию губернатора, а затем в военную тюрьму. На протяжении всего XVIII века  здесь содержались пленные английские моряки. В следующем веке здесь была обычная тюрьма, а в начале ХХ века замок выкупил городом и в 1908 году основал там муниципальный музей.
